Click and listen to the Healing Moves Foundation’s radio public service announcement! The PSA was presented to all of the radio stations throughout the State of Nevada and played June through September this summer. The Nevada Broadcasters Association estimated 600-800 play times per month! It was a great way to get our message out to encourage people to move a little more for better health. We would like to thank the Nevada Organ and Tissue Donor Task Force for joining us in our mission and sponsoring this campaign.
The Healing Moves Foundation has become a founding member of the Federal Physical Activity Guidelines Coalition to ensure that the Department of Health and Human Services regularly updates and promotes the Guidelines at least every five years, as is done with federal dietary guidelines. Our organization relies on the latest scientific research concerning the preventive and therapeutic effects of exercise. Over the years, recommendations for physical activity have changed drastically. It wasn’t too long ago that a patient’s treatment plan after most surgeries was days of bed rest. Now, it is common knowledge that most patients who start moving sooner, speed their recovery time.
We support and encourage members of Congress to approve H.R. 3851 in the U.S. House and S.1818 in the Senate, stressing the importance of having regularly updated Physical Activity Guidelines that reflect the latest scientific and translational breakthroughs about the role of physical activity in promoting health and preventing disease.

Please come to the Healing Moves Volunteers Meeting on August 18! Our vision at the Healing Moves Foundation is to help people who are facing health challenges by giving them the opportunity to participate in specialized exercise programs. Compassionate people, like you, are who we need to help fulfill our organization’s mission! We will be discussing all of our new and exciting programs. We will also be recruiting for volunteers to work on the upcoming Pink Ribbon Program for breast cancer patients.
Reposted from Men’s Health: Hundreds of guys — including some of the world’s fittest men — have taken their final breaths while wearing running shoes. Here’s how to outsmart the reaper –
Guy goes out for a run. It’s just a 4-miler–nothing, really, to a seasoned marathoner who usually runs 10 miles a day, 7 days a week. Nobody knows why he stops 40 or 50 yards short of his front door–maybe he’s checking his pulse, maybe he’s tying a shoe–but everybody knows what happens next to Jim Fixx, the 52-year-old patron saint of running: He dies. Family physicians have a major responsibility to their patients to help them promote their general health, both physical and mental. Patients tend to require more frequent visits as they age, giving multiple possibilities for physicians to apply the latest medical research to promote patients’ well-being. In the past several years, research has shown physical activity and fitness to be major determinants of health. As recommended by the Exercise Is Medicine™ (EIM) initiative, exercise needs to be established as a vital sign and assessed at all doctor’s visits. In our recent study, we found a strong inverse relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and incident stroke. In fact, there was a 60% lower stroke incidence in the high-fitness group compared with the low-fitness group. We know from prior studies that individuals can improve fitness by participating in regular physical activity. Numerous studies provide strong evidence that physical activity and fitness protect against numerous health problems. It is unlikely that there will ever be a pill that provides the multiple benefits of regular physical activity.
